The French naval Industry Group, GICAN, was created in 1992 by companies involved in the naval industrial sector, under the sponsorship of the French MOD. Since that date, GICAN has broadened its scope, now encompassing maritime security and safety and commercial shipbuilding. As a result, the organization has been granted the sponsorship of the Ministry of Transportation, Public Works, Tourism and Sea (General Directorate for Maritime Affairs - DAM).
140 companies are members of GICAN today, representing the widest range of activities in the naval and maritime fields. Among them there are not only key prime contractors, system integrators and equipment providers, but also Small and Medium Enterprises (SME) involved in naval, cruise or mercantile shipbuilding and surveillance activities. The Group as a whole represents a 5 billion euros turnover, with more than 40.000 people.
in France : as a member of CIDEF (Council for Defense Industries in France) GICAN is also a member of the French maritime Cluster in european institutions (European Commission, European Parliament, European Defence Agency, OCCAR, EMSA) in european associations : GICAN is a member of EMEC (European Marine Equipment Council) and ASD (Aerospace and Defence Industries Association of Europe) in inteational organisations : GICAN is a member of NIAG (NATO Industrial Advisory Group).
GICAN is, through the CIDEF(French Defence Industries Council), an active member of ASD (Aerospace and Defence Industries Association of Europe). Gathering all european industrial assocations in the aeronautics, space, defence and security sector, ASD promotes and supports the competitive development of the European industry in those sectors. It aims at building a strong industrial and technological defence base at European level.
NIAG (Nato Industrial Advisory Group) is a consultative structure, consisting in delegations of the member countries of NATO, which supplies studies, reports and recommandations to the conference of national directors of armament (CNAD), on how to foster industry-to-industry and govement-to-industry armaments cooperation within the alliance.
EMEC (European Marine Equipment Council) is a European association of Marine equipment suppliers grouping 12 national associations among which COFRENA. After the fusion between GICAN and COFRENA, the Equipement suppliers' committee of GICAN is now member of EMEC and plays an important role among european naval and maritime manufacturers. EMEC, among others, aims to encourage participation of members in R&D - and support programme of the european commission.

Created in 2002, this committee gathers specific needs of SMEs and provides them with information about funds and grants, procurement policies, export rules and regulations. It also helps to identify and exploit business opportunities. Its action aims to strengthen links between SMEs and prime contractors.
GICAN has merged with COFRENA in January 2006 and thus created a specific committee dedicated to Equipment suplliers for commercial shipbuilding. It provides marine equipment suppliers with support and advice on managing business relationship with prime contractors, and improve their business environment in Europe by participating in the EMEC (European Marine Equipment Council).
In June 2006, GICAN and ATECMAR decided to merge in order to join forces in the field of maritime security/safety and environment. The aim of the committeeis to disseminate official information and company news to members, to promote members' products and services, to evaluate market trends by country and businesses and to provide regular updating on rules and regulations.
